LIPOSUCTION · AFTERCARE · BELGIUM
Post-liposuction aftercare in Belgium, guided by tissue physiology
The outcome of liposuction is not settled when you leave the operating theatre. In the weeks that follow, your tissue decides how it reorganises: smooth and even, or with lingering swelling and areas that feel firm. At Maison Ipanema Institute in Maasmechelen (Limburg) and Meise, our post-liposuction aftercare supports that process with phase-adapted, physiological care, coordinated with your surgeon.
PHYSIOLOGY
Why the weeks after liposuction matter so much
Liposuction is a controlled injury to the tissue beneath the skin. The body answers with inflammation, the necessary first stage of healing. Small vessels become more permeable, fluid and proteins move into the tissue spaces, and oedema develops.
That fluid has to leave through the lymphatic system. Yet liposuction also disturbs the fine lymphatic vessels in the treated area. The lymphatic load therefore rises at the very moment drainage capacity is temporarily reduced. When protein-rich fluid lingers, it sustains inflammation and encourages the body to lay down more connective tissue.
The result is a causal chain: inflammation → oedema → lymphatic overload → increased risk of fibrosis. Fibrosis can feel like firm, uneven areas or cords under the skin, and may affect both comfort and contour. Good aftercare works on the cause: helping to modulate the inflammatory response, supporting lymphatic drainage and preserving the glide between tissue layers. In doing so, it helps reduce the risk of fibrosis.
WHO IT IS FOR
Who this aftercare is for
Our support is designed for people who have had, or are planning, liposuction, including:
- after conventional liposuction of the abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms or back;
- after more extensive procedures such as lipo 360, HD liposuction or a BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift), where the lymphatic load is greater;
- when swelling persists, the tissue feels tight, or areas feel firm or irregular;
- when you were operated on abroad and want structured follow-up once you are back in Belgium;
- when you have questions about your compression garment: how to wear it, how it fits, or when to change stage;
- before surgery, to understand what your tissue will need in the months ahead.

APPROACH
How we guide your post-liposuction recovery
Every programme begins with a careful assessment: the procedure performed, your surgeon’s instructions, the condition of your skin and tissue, your compression and your daily activity. From there we build a plan following the NCT Method®, which follows the phases of healing:
- Inflammatory phase (roughly the first 7–10 days): very gentle manual lymphatic drainage, with no deep pressure, focused on drainage and comfort.
- Proliferative phase (approximately day 7/10 to 21): controlled progression, early fascial mobilisation and therapeutic taping to support glide between tissue layers.
- Remodelling phase (from approximately day 21, for months): progressive work on scars and firm areas, with technology once the tissue is ready.
These timings vary from person to person and from procedure to procedure. Depending on the phase, we may use photobiomodulation (PBM), TECAR, pulsed therapeutic ultrasound, radiofrequency, Endermologie/LPG or EMS, always alongside compression guidance. When aftercare can begin depends on the procedure and your surgeon’s approval; it is often within the first week. There is no standard number of sessions: it is determined after assessment and reviewed as you progress. Where needed, we coordinate with your surgeon or physician.
SAFETY
Limitations and safety
Our aftercare is physiological tissue support, not medical treatment. We do not diagnose, do not prescribe medication and do not perform medical acts. Your surgeon remains your first point of contact for every medical question.
Contact your surgeon or physician immediately if you notice:
- fever;
- pain that is increasing rather than easing;
- redness or warmth of the skin;
- sudden or one-sided increase in swelling;
- any problem with a wound or incision, such as discharge, opening or an unusual smell.
Call 112 for calf pain with swelling, or for shortness of breath. If anything raises concern during a session, we refer you to your physician.

Frequently asked questions
Answered honestly.
When can I start aftercare after liposuction?
It depends on the procedure and your surgeon's approval; it is often within the first week. In the earliest phase we work only very gently, without deep pressure.
How many sessions will I need?
There is no standard number. It is determined after assessment, based on your procedure, how your tissue responds and how your recovery evolves. We review the plan as you progress.
Why do some areas feel firm after liposuction?
Firm areas can develop when protein-rich oedema lingers and the body produces more connective tissue during healing. Phase-adapted aftercare may help soften these areas and helps reduce the risk of fibrosis. If an area suddenly hardens with pain, redness or warmth, contact your surgeon first.
I had my surgery abroad. Can you help?
Yes. We review your surgeon's instructions and build a plan for your recovery in Belgium. Medical follow-up remains with your surgeon or a physician, and we refer you whenever something needs medical attention.
Do I need to keep wearing my compression garment?
The duration and type of compression are set by your surgeon. We guide you on how to wear it and how it fits, and point out when folds or pressure points may be hindering recovery.
Is aftercare different after a BBL?
Yes. After a BBL we take into account both the liposuction areas and the areas where fat was transferred. We follow your surgeon's instructions on pressure and positioning closely and adapt every technique accordingly.
Is the aftercare painful?
In the early phase it is very gentle and focused on comfort. Later, work on firm areas or scars can feel more intense, but always within what you and your tissue can tolerate.
Begin your recovery with the right conversation
